ACTFL is an acronym that stands for American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. The aim of this organization is to provide a way of testing the ability of foreign language speakers. The language levels are broken down into four sections: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and Superior. In turn, these four sections are subdivided into three smaller segments: Low, Mid and High. Students are tested on four different areas of study: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Thus, some students may reach the advanced level in reading and writing while staying at a lower level in listening and speaking.
The latest ACTFL Annual Convention took place in Philadelphia, the largest city of Pennsylvania, between the 16th and the 18th November 2012. ACTFL has partnered with numerous foreign language schools in order to be able to offer a selection of study abroad scholarships to its members. For example, the IMAC Spanish Language Programs Scholarship consists of four weeks worth of Spanish language tuition in Guadalajara, Mexico while the Cemanhuac Educational Community Scholarship comprises two weeks worth of Spanish language tuition, housing, meals and one educational field trip.
STARTALK is part of the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) as declared by former president of the United States, George W. Bush. The NSLI-Y provides scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in overseas immersion programs. STARTALK’s mission is to increase the number of Americans learning, speaking, and teaching foreign languages by offering teachers and students a partial scholarship to study one of the three languages listed below:
1.	Russian – 5th most spoken language in the world with 277 million speakers
2.	Arabic – 6th most spoken language in the world with 246 million speakers
3.	Chinese – 1st most spoken language in the world with 1 billion + speakers
The upcoming ACTFL Annual Convention is taking place between the 22nd and the 24th November 2013 in Orlando, Florida. More than 250 companies will be displaying their most recent products and services for students and teachers of foreign languages. Harvard University graduate, Dr Wagner, will deliver the keynote speech to set the underlying tone of the convention and summarize the core message of the event. In the past, Dr Wagner has worked as a university professor and a high school teacher. Nowadays, he is a highly sought after educational advisor in the United States and beyond. Dr Wagner has written numerous articles and five books. He will be signing copies of his latest published works: “Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change the World” following his keynote speech.
Since its 2004 convention in Chicago, Illinois, ACTFL have declared its reason for existing is to provide “vision, leadership and support” for “quality teaching and learning of languages”.

Amerispan co-founders, John Slocum and Dorioara Pinku, started out as a pair of Spanish students in Latin America. During their travels, they realised that the region was full of Spanish language schools offering affordable tuition to people of all ages. Slocum and Pinku found it intriguing that the majority of the students learning Spanish were trained professionals like doctors and lawyers; this led the pair to believe that the USA was seriously lacking in Spanish language schools and they set about trying to change this. What started out as a business plan on a scrap of paper on a beach in Rio Janeiro is now a multi-award winning company that has been “building bridges between cultures” for the last two decades. Presently, Amerispan offers 15 languages in 45 different countries.

Amerispan has 25 years worth of experience in helping students to travel to different countries to learn Spanish. Staff members have personally experienced the destinations on offer by Amerispan so they can give first hand advice on what to expect and how to prepare for your trip. Amerispan is in constant contact with the schools and the host families so all parties are kept informed at all times. There is no risk involved in booking a course through Amerispan because you can cancel at any time and get a full refund. You must give three weeks notice if you wish to cancel your course to give Amerispan the opportunity to offer you place to somebody else.

If at the end of your course you are not fully satisfied, Amerispan will pay for an extra week’s worth of tuition on a Spanish course of your choice. In order to claim one week free, you must send an email to the following address admin@amerispan.com explaining why you are dissatisfied with your program. Amerispan uses this information to improve the learning experience of future students. Finally, in the unlikely circumstance that you find another company offering an equivalent course for a lower price, Amerispan not only matches their price, but offers a price that is 10% lower than the competitor. For a course to be considered “equivalent”, it must meet certain criteria:

a) The course must be in the same city

b) The number of students in the class must be the same or fewer.

c) The amount of Spanish teaching time and the quality of instruction must be comparable.

d) The accommodation must be of a similar quality.

To sum up, if you buy a course from Amerispan, you can be sure of three things:

A full refund if you change your mind

One week free if you’re not fully satisfied

The best possible price

Amerispan’s principal goal is to serve their customers. The Philadelphia office is open 8 hours a day; 5 days a week so there will almost always be a member of staff available to help you whether it be over the phone or via email. Amerispan understand that there is a lot of information available and they are here to help you sort through it and to make an informed decision.

Amerispan recently featured in the New York Times! An article entitled “Single for the Holidays” by Stephanie Rosenbloom discussed in depth the benefits of travelling alone as well as some of the best solo traveler destinations. It seems that Rosenbloom is experienced in the field of “flying solo” and would recommend it for the following reasons:

If you are away from family & friends at Christmas time, then a Parisian café is much nicer place to be alone than your living room where the chances of being approached by a beautiful stranger are considerably less.

Tour operator Abercrombie and Kent have noticed a 29% increase in solo travel compared to last year. This demonstrates that it is an increasingly popular option and no longer a risky thing to do with “Singles” tours ensuring safety in numbers.

Tours for solo travelers attract people with no romantic ambitions whatsoever as well as eligible singles.

Solo travel is a great opportunity to engage is solo activities such as a being scrubbed at a Turkish bath.

Overseas travel is a great opportunity to learn a foreign language (this is where Amerispan comes in!)

Amerispan offers over 15 languages in more than 45 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia and Africa. Not only is knowledge of a second language a hugely gratifying thing to have, but you will be more marketable and have more career choices than your monolingual counterpart. What’s more, your travel experience will be utterly transformed: Spaniards are kindhearted and hospitable and if you can speak their language, you will find that you receive a much warmer welcome than your monolingual counterpart.

According to Rosenbloom, some of the best solo traveler destinations are as follows:

Anne Banas, executive producer of www.smartertravel.com says she particularly likes the European Cities in the winter given that they are cheaper out of season. Additionally, many travelers say that they have a more authentic experience in winter time given that the locals aren’t all out of town holidaying themselves.

Venice, although renowned as a couples retreat, is allegedly a great place for a “contemplative escape” according to Alison Bing, writer of 40 books for www.lonelyplanet.com. She reminisces on a day she went bar-hopping with a group of Venetians during “high water” (when the Venetian Lagoon rises and everyone is left ankle-deep in water).

You can take Courses in sun soaked places like Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Amerispan offers fun solo breaks such as Spanish & Windsurfing, French & Wine and Portuguese & Capoeira (a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance and music). Amerispan also offers language courses in France, Spain and Italy specifically designed for daring adults over the age of 50.

By Felicia, Study Abroad Consultant

AmeriSpan just sent me on a tour of Spain! Although there was a lot of work to be done, I had an excellent time and a lot of fun. While there, I visited 10 of our Spanish schools in Spain, starting first in Salamanca, then to Madrid and ending in Barcelona. I also visited our Spain College Study Abroad programs.

I arrived exhausted in Salamanca from a night of flying, but quickly found the energy to start exploring. It is a beautiful city with all the ancient sandstone architecture and windy cobble stone streets. Between meetings I got to stroll around town, which is one of the favorite pastimes for everyone who goes there. From Salamanca I was off to Madrid, where the city buzzed around me until I was literally buzzing through the city on my first motorcycle ride!

Then there was Barcelona. I admit I am partial, but it's because I was there longest. It is really true what they say, the architecture is incredible. Down in Ciutat Vella near the Ramblas, you can find amazing examples of Gothic architecture lining webs of endless narrow streets. Not only is this an ideal place to take in sights, it's got some great shopping. My last day was spent with Guadi, going to Parc Guell, Sagrada Familia and Casa Mila. I ended it with a drink of cava down by the beach at sunset. Not too bad for a business trip.

Where are you from?
East Norriton, PA (otherwise know as Norristown)

What's your sign?
Libra
How long have you been with AmeriSpan?
Almost 1 year!

What are your current favorites?
Books: Any book written by Jody Picoult, the Bangkok 8 series, Memory Keeper's Daughter, Kafka on the Shore, Running with Scissors and Dry, and Chuck Klosterman's books.

Movies: Classic favorites include The Outsiders, Pretty in Pink, 16 Candles, Mighty Ducks 2 & 3, Empire Records, and Newsies.
Music: I don't really have a favorite; I am pretty open to listening to anything. I have even begun to appreciate country. And of course, I am reviving my childhood love for New Kids on the Block

What do you do in your spare time?
TV, read, travel, hang out with friends, and shop!

What is your favorite place in the world and why?
Pai, Thailand. It's a small village in the northwestern region of Thailand that is just starting to get attention from tourists. It's a great place to start outdoor adventures. I love it because of the small guesthouse I stay at. It's down a quite dirt road and all of the rooms are private bungalows with nothing inside but a mattress, a mosquito net, and a light bulb. Each comes with a hammock on the front porch. If you are lucky, you can get one right on the river. It is the best place to relax after long travels or just to get away from the big cities.

What is your favorite food?
It's a tie between my grandmother's baked ziti and som tum (papaya salad) and fried chicken from Ms. Ming in Bangkok.

What is your favorite drink?
Banana fruit shakes
What is your favorite time of year?
Fall. I love when the leaves begin to change and there is that slight chill in the air. Plus, I have my birthday to look forward to.

By Sharon Rhode, Director of Educational Outreach
When I was a kid, I truly believed I would never leave my neighborhood. Somehow, along the way, I have traveled to a dozen countries on four continents, studied half-a-dozen languages, worked for half-a-dozen international exchange organizations and had done graduate work in Intercultural Management at the School for International Training (SIT) in Brattleboro, VT. Who knew?
It's become my passion to share the delights of study abroad and language learning with others. One of the things I like best about AmeriSpan is that there's something for everyone here…teens, families, college students, young professionals and adults of every age and stage…I just spoke with a 70-year-old who wants to go to Italy!
Here are some of my top international experiences: I worked as the Coordinadora de Programas Internacionales at the US/Uruguayan Bi-national Center in Montevideo, Uruguay for the better part of two years, and got to travel throughout the Southern Cone, from the amazing Iguazu Falls (if you're anywhere near it you must go!) to –- almost –- the end of the earth, Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world. Highlight? The pinguinos en sus nidos (penguin babies in their nests)! Earlier, I spent a Summer Abroad in Florence, Italy, followed by four months of travel through Europe. Highlight? Visiting my exchange sister in Nancy, France. Also fun was running through my English and French and finally arriving at Spanish to ask directions in Israel –- from a soldier who had come from Argentina!
Choosing to work in international educational exchange and cross-cultural training allows me to encourage others to have their own international adventures. Because for me, best of all, is working with international students, scholars, exchange visitors, au pairs, business people, and everyday travelers arranging programs that take folks out of their neighborhoods and into the world!

Where are you from?
I was born in Philadelphia and my family moved to North-Eastern Pennsylvania when I was 3. They moved to Scranton, you know, home of "The Office." Well I'm not actually from Scranton; I lived 10 miles north. I use Scranton as a reference point because no one knows where Pittston is and that show is hilarious (more season 1 & 2 than the later.)

What's your sign?
Gemini, apparently I am “two-faced” or I have split personalities. I don't really see it but I guess you should ask my fellow colleagues. Kidding.

How long have you been with AmeriSpan?
Almost a year!
What are your current favorites?
Books: Haruki Murakami is spectacular! Kafka on the Shore is by far one of the most amazing novels I've read. Let's see…I just finished reading Richard Brautigan, In Watermelon Sugar – Pretty odd, I'm into it. Another is The Araboolies of Liberty Street, I read it a lot as a kid; a very fine story.
Movies: Suicide Club, Harold and Maude, Clueless, Alice in Wonderland, Me You and Everyone We Know
Music: Bjork, Tujiko Noriko, Red House Painters, Electrelane…
What do you do in your spare time?
Estudio Espanol en el centro de la ciudad y hablo con mi gato en ingles! I also enjoy eating and then talking about what I ate. Brunch is my favorite pastime; I try to eat brunch at a different place every weekend. Maybe I have too much spare time.. I do like other things such as reading and spending time with good people.
What is your favorite place in the world and why?
So far in my travels, I've fell in love with 2 places: Tokyo, Japan and Guanajuato, Mexico; Both quite opposite from each other. I had a blast in Tokyo, really. What a great place to be, fascinating and life changing. Guanajuato is just a place that I've never felt happier. The whole vibe was energetic yet easygoing. It has a great nightlife too, some really interesting places to hang out and its gorgeous!
What is your favorite meal?
A HUGE burrito filled of cheese, veggie meat, refried beans, sour cream, and all the other essential burrito fillings. Yum. I also enjoy huge bowls of miso-ramen or udon noodles.
What is your favorite drink?
Ginger Beer
What is your favorite time of year?
That time of the year when Philadelphia starts to get warm and the whole city seems to change. Everything opens up and people go out and have more fun. And it's the time I actually get on a bike.
