Kindle 2 for Study Abroad

Put away your iPods and iPhones – the Kindle is the Next Big Thing!

So you are about
to set out on your big study abroad adventure. If you read our e-report,
AmeriSpan’s Ultimate Guide to Packing,” you know that space is limited and
keeping your luggage at a comfortable weight is paramount to your comfort in
transport and to your safety by not being a target for thieves. With long
flights, delays everywhere, and many times a lack of English-language reading
material in the host country, many travelers want to bring along several books
and magazines, plus local guide books (maybe a couple, depending on how many
destinations you have planned for your travels) and phrasebooks too.

If you’ve ever
carried even a couple of books for any amount of time, you know they all have
one thing in common: they’re heavy! Not to mention the space they take up in
your bag. Enter a promising solution, the Kindle 2
. Weighing in at 10.2 ounces, which is lighter than a paperback
book, and measuring 8” x 5.3” and just over 1/3 of an inch thick, this
electronic reading device can store 1,500 books.

Books are
downloaded wirelessly and quickly on a 3G network, so no internet connection is
required. For now, however, you will have to make sure to download all your
books and newspapers in the United States prior to your travel.
Internationally, you can load them onto the Kindle 2 via a USB connection from
a computer with an internet connection.

There is a wide variety of travel books for almost any destination available to load onto the Kindle 2, such as Frommer’s – Buenos Aires. Phrasebooks
in many languages are available too, such as “Spanish Language Phrase Book” by Don Perreira, or try the Advanced 25 Language Phrasebook from MobileReference if
you plan on traveling to many different countries.

If you are planning a study abroad trip, save weight, space, and bring a lot more
reading material than you usually would be able to carry with the lightweight
and portable Kindle 2. Also be sure to check out the larger Kindle DX .
