Last Days in Peru: Futbol, Food & Discotechas

By Jamie F., Guestblogger from Cusco, Peru SALUD program

I have just finished up my time in Cusco :( I can´t believe its
actually over! On Thursday night my parents and brother just got back into town
so I took a taxi to pick up my brother since its hard for them to get around
without me since they don’t speak Spanish. We tried to find my friend’s
apartment which proved much more difficult than it should’ve but after asking
many people we finally found it. So we had some snacks and drinks before
grabbing two taxis for 10 people and cramming in for the game. The roads
were all blocked off so we walked for a while after we got dropped off. The
roads were going crazy, every street was jam packed with people all over the
place going to the game and people selling gear for Ciencero. I had already
bought a jersey so I was set for the night!

It took us a while to find the correct entrance where my friend’s
homestay brother was saving us seats. We finally made it in and kind of
snuck in since our brother was ushering us in with the tix. We were in the
stadium almost an hour and a half early so we just sat there and ate and drank
and watched people. The stadium slowly filled up with people and eventually
there was no walkway. We had to go to the bathroom during half time and I
literally thought I was going to die because there were so many people and
nowhere to walk so everyone was pushing each other and it was like the biggest
mosh pit you could ever imagine and more. I touched so many people that I
don’t even want to think how unsanitary it was. Haha. But we made it to the
bathroom and back without dying so that was a relief.

Although supposedly Liverpool which is the team from Uruguay we
were playing is much better and we played terribly when we played them last
week in Uruguay we somehow beat them 2-0 and it wasn’t even an extremely close
game but nonetheless very exciting!  It was really a huge win for Cusco!
The rest of the night we kept on our jerseys to show our pride and celebrated
out at the discotechas. That was the last night out with all of my friends
so it was definitely a bittersweet night.

I was the only one that showed up for class the next morning oops! Haha but we
made some speeches, got our certificates and said our sad goodbyes. Hopefully
I’ll be able to see some of the people sometime in the near future since some
of them live within a couple of hours and others want to come visit SoCal, I
mean who wouldn’t want to come out to Cali?

I met up with my parents for lunch and we ended up at a real touristy place,
Limo, that was overpriced but still pretty good. We walked around the plaza and
went into a gorgeous church in the plaza. Then we went to the famous
Qorinkancha which is the temple of the sun, moon, thunder, stars and was the
center of Incan world. There were maps that showed us how the lines that led from
the Qorinkancha to every Incan city and they were all in perfect lines.

I returned home for a little nap since I hadn’t gotten much sleep
the night before due to our discoteching before returning to my parents hotel
and taking them to a fabulous local sandwich shop. Coincidentally it has the
same name as my favorite Mexican food place at home, Juanitas.  They had
delicious sandwiches and fries and I had already tried it out with my friends a
few nights previously. It took a little deciphering to help my parents figure
out what everything was but in the end I think everyone was happy with their
selections.
