Alajela, Costa Rica is home to one of our best and most successful study abroad programs. One of our study abroad coordinators recently took a trip there and now shares with us first-hand what the homestay families were like:
I visited 4 homestays. The first family has been
working with the school for many many years and the host mother told me she
thinks she has hosted over 100 students in her time. Since she started hosting
students, her grown children have also become host families. They all live on
the same gated property. There were 5 houses there that could hold students.
The next families I visited were some that are used to hold teenagers for
Junior Immersion or Groups. We drove down a long street and I was shown all the
houses on the street that host students. Almost every house or every other
house worked with our school. I spoke to mom who hosts teens. She told me how
much she enjoys hosting teens because they have such great personalities and
she also has a young daughter so it’s fun for her too. She also told me that
almost all of the moms on her street are housewives so they are home all day
long. They team up to keep an eye on the teens at all times. In general, the
homes here were nicer than those in Guatemala and could hold usually 2 or so
students. They were similar to this in Coronado.
