Study Abroad Peru: Puno & Titicaca

By Jamie F., Guestblogger from Cusco, Peru SALUD program

So we arrived in Puno at midnight and had a driver and guide pick us up at the bus station and take us to the hotel. The guys originally wanted to go out to a discotecha but the hotel said nothing was open and it was really unsafe to go out in Puno at night. So it was a  good thing it was too late and we decided not to go out. We still only got about 6 hours of sleep since our bus was leaving at 7:45 the following morning. We picked up some other people on our bus and then headed down to the dock. I figured I would have enough time to change over some money but didn’t so ended up borrowing soles from friends the entire weekend, oops.

Study Abroad Cusco: Medical Visit

By Jamie F., Guestblogger from Cusco, Peru SALUDprogram

Thursday I got to work with the Peruvian doctor and help her do physicals and exams and write prescriptions. Then on Friday I went with her and a nurse and pharmacist to a very poor village about an hour and a half outside of Cusco where they set up a clinic for 3 hours. These people live about 30 min off any main roads and many only speak Quetichan which is the ancient Incan language and some of the poor villages only speak that language.

We were supposed to have a lecture on Peruvian health at 9am but the doctor couldn’t come until later so we still showed up at 9am and had 3 hours to kill. We went to the Inca museo which is a very interesting meuseum and not on the bolleto turistico (the standard ticket for some of the main tourist attractions in Cusco).

Studying Abroad in Cusco Peru: Excursion Weekend

By Jamie F., Guestblogger from Cusco, Peru SALUD program

Hello!

I am now entering my second week of classes here in Peru. We had a great weekend traveling within 2 hours of Cusco to visit various Incan and other Peruvian treasures. On Saturday a group of us went to Tipon (which is about 30 minutes outside of Cusco). This was an amazing place to see the agricultural specialties of the Incas. The Incas invented an irrigation system that still runs today and the water is extremely pure.

Studying Abroad in Cusco Peru: First Impressions

By Jamie F., Guestblogger

Hola everyone!

I´m in Peru right now and loving it. I´m in the city of Cusco which is somewhat famous for its ancient Inca influences. There are ruins all over the city and these aren’t just your typically run of the mill ruins but marvelous structures that they don’t really know how they were built. The Inca walls are made with huge rocks and reach heights that really make it hard to fathom how they were actually able to build these walls.
