What is your background?
I’m 26 and I’m from England. I have been living in Uruguay for nearly two years. I’m a graduate of English language and literature, and I have worked as an English teacher in England and in Uruguay.

I spent my second week working at Madre Teresa de Calcuta in the afternoons with my friends Elizabeth and Jen.

The first time I was showed around the place, I wanted to cry.  I think I almost started a couple of times, but here's the set-up: the place houses men, women, and children suffer from varying mental and physical disabilities and is run by a group of three nuns.

On-Screen Spanish Translation: Welcome to the Future!

As our more tech-savvy students probably are aware of by now, there are hundreds of smart phone applications on the market dedicated to helping you learn a language.  There are mobile dictionaries, games, lessons, and more.

But did you know that there is now an application that will A. Analyze and translate a word or phrase that you are capturing with your camera and B. Show the translation directly on the images on the screen?  This invention would be a perfect accessory for the language traveler abroad.  We tested the application ourselves, and you've truly got to see it to believe it!

Kanazawa Featured in New York Times

Kanazawa_MtHakusan Recently, the New York Times published an article about Kanazawa, Japan, which is one of AmeriSpan's favorite locations to Study Abroad in Japan.  The article explores the sheer beauty and rich history of Kanazawa, and gives great insight into the city through a curious visitor's eyes. As the article reminds us, all Japanese know about the Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa's wonders.

Learn a Language at Home

Think_spanish2 If you want to learn a new language, there are many ways to go about it. Of course, the best way way is to participate in an AmeriSpan Study Abroad program but most need to find the time to do this.  If you are in school, taking a few semesters is good choice, with perhaps a summer, semester, or year abroad in a country that speaks your target language. For those not still in school, many of you did take a language at one point and may want a way to refresh your skills. We have some suggestions on ways to do learn at home from language learning software & online programs to subscriptions to magazines in other lasnguages to language classes by telephone.
